The Swampscott Yacht Club Hosts the 10th Annual Polar Bear Plunge at Fisherman’s Beach in Swampscott on New Year’s Day, 2016. The 2016 Plunge honors two Swampscott residents the community lost in 2015..
On Friday, January 1, 2016 the Swampscott Yacht Club will host its 10th annual Polar Bear Plunge. Participants start the New Year in an invigorating and charitable way by plunging into the chilly ocean waters off Fisherman’s Beach at 11:00 am. This year hundreds of hardy, enthusiastic and brave souls will dash into the water to benefit causes that honor Swampscott residents Billy Ryan and Darren Spinney. Billy was a member of the Swampscott Yacht Club and a popular long time football coach who drowned in September. A portion of the funds raised will be donated in his honor to the All Blue Foundation which is raising funds for the new athletic complex at Blocksidge Field. This complex includes an artificial turf field. The other Swampscott resident being remembered and honored by the 2016 Polar Bear Plunge is Darren Spinney. Darren passed away suddenly in September leaving his wife and two teenage children. The Spinney Children Education Fund will be the other beneficiary of the Polar Plunge.
The Polar Bear Plunge has raised over $80,000 for local charities since it began. Past beneficiaries have included: Maureen Bolognese, The Swampscott Library, The Friends of Swampscott Sailing, My Brother’s Table, The Jared Raymond and Jennifer Harris Scholarship Funds, The Legere Family Education Fund, The Maureen Ingram Scholarship Fund, the Swampscott Education Foundation, and the Whelan Education Fund.
